Old hands again win Will's shield in memorial game

The second annual charity cricket match in aid of the SDBTT William Doolin Fund between past Cheriton players and a current Cheriton and Sellindge XI showed the veterans have still got it - whatever 'it' is - as they retained the winners' shield. This game is played in memory of Dover schoolboy William Doolin who died two years ago, aged just 10, from a brain tumour.

The batting line ups were stronger this year, with both sides able to field 14 players.

The past XI batted first and their first three batsmen - Michael Harding (26), Richard Harding (30) and Darren Marwood (25) all retired not out after giving them a solid start and laying the foundations for a respectable total. The current team's bowlers struggled to take wickets and their side was set a target of 155 to win.

In reply, Cheriton and Sellindge - who combined forces a couple of years ago and now play at the pleasant Swan Lane ground in the village - found runs difficult to come by and, losing a few early wickets, were soon on the back foot. Aaron Cook and Ryan Hall, who both retired with 25 to their name, tried to push the score along. But the target was strating to get away from them and the past players clinched their second successive victory by a margin of 38 runs. Pick of the bowlers from the past team were Carl Mason (three for 10) and Alan Winstanley (two for four).

More than £870* was raised for the charity and all proceeds to go towards funding research into brain tumours.

Bernard Doolin, Cheriton and Sellindge chairman, and uncle of William Doolin, said: "Special thanks go to (former Kent captain) David Fulton, who is one of the fund's patrons, for organising the main raffle prizes." "Thanks also to Robert Winstanley Windows and Alexander Forbes Financial Services for their sponsorship, and to everyone involved for their generosity and support."

The fund would also like to thank Peter Winstanley for helping to contact past player, Malcolm Doolin for liaising with David Fulton and Mick Cork, Sports Editor of the Folkestone Herald, for the press coverage in local newspapers.

* A further donation has now taken the total to over £930.
